First and Second Graders have made so much progress this year in all areas, but we are especially impressed by the amount of English the students understand and are able to use. Each morning the students participate in group with teachers Mercedes and Erica where they have a chance to share what they are excited about or something they did the day before. At the end of the day Mercedes and Erica invite the students to reflect on their day, asking them what they have learned. This introspection is helpful, allowing the class to reflect on their learning processes and to reinforce vocabulary and ideas.
Aside from oral language skills, the class has learned to sound out words and write their own sentences. Check out the First and Second Grade Class' color coded word wall! They have learned so much useful vocabulary this year.
The First and Second Graders also practice English with their daily calendar. They have mastered concepts of date and time and look forward to future events.
10-9-8-7-6! It is hard to believe that there is only one week of school left. Below is a beautiful count down created by students from the First and Second Grade. Aside from practicing their numbers and counting, the concrete countdown is a good way to prepare to say good bye. We have spent so much time at school, it is difficult to conceptualize the year coming to an end and the changes that it will bring, so it is important to discuss this with students in clear ways so that they know what to expect.
Looking forward to sharing a wonderful last week with LTIS teachers and students!
